Future of billboards

The billboards of the future are not about advertising products. Instead companies, organizations and individuals can sponsor artists to create a skyline of positive messaging and inspirational imagery on a large scale. A community panel acts as curator for the cities collection of billboards like a gallery or museum. Rotating collections with other cities and even developing identities around the collections their city showcases. New artists are discovered, famous artists create new work for these highly visible platforms. Freeways become calm-ways during rush hour as drivers see a more beautiful skyline vs car ads and jeans. Imagine the possibilities!

You need an idea to business ad campaign that touts the success of supporting/commissioning an artist to create a message. Does the messaging tie to the brand promise of the commissioner as well as provide an intriguing insight or inspiration?

Imagine if a company like GAP or Apple paid [as usual] to the billboard company. Similar to PBS's way of acknowledging their sponsors a more discrete endorsement would be incorporated on the board [smaller or non-invasive logo someplace] or nothing at all if they would also be able to use the art on the billboard as part of their advertising campaign in other ways [in-store decorative panels, shopping bags etc] Some obvious limitations would be imposed [like duration and copyrights] but it would be a benefit for both artist and advertiser to expand on the theme.

Who will foot the bill for these boards? Is there a way to satisfy a company or sponsor that wants to increase brand awareness?

There is one billboard outside of my kitchen window that always has the most worthless advertisements on it. Personally, I'd help sponsor art on that billboard. I wonder if enough citizens could get together to help support this?
