Tram instead of buses

Sao Paulo - Submitted by bmontuori on Jul 29 2014

The purpose of this idea is to exchange the use of buses in the core of São Paulo to sustainable trams, such as those in San Francisco/ California, which is also a city full of hills, and those in many european cities. Since the creation of buses corridors the city has improved its traffic and the number of buses has been reduced. Therefore they could be easily exchangeable in order to implement trams that are cleaner and safer for pedestrians and cyclists. The use of buses not only pollute the air but also the aesthetics of the city.
The first movement would be to implement trams in the main avenues such as Paulista, Rebouças, Faria Lima, Brigadeiro Luis Antonio, Nove de Julho and others including the city centre, which are areas where people go to work every day. Some routes like "Sacomã-Terminal Pinheiros", "Paraíso-Campo Limpo" could easily be implemented specially because they are already connected to the train(cptm)/subway(metro).
This idea needs improvements and a bigger study of flows and commuting.

The city mayor has has put a major effort to improve transport in São Paulo. So his party would have to support the idea to make it feasible.

As most of the trains in São Paulo is imported, the same would probably happen with the trams and equipment.

This would be a long therm action. Therefore a huge investment could be done to make this idea happen. Our main problem when it comes to trams are the gauge(bitola) and the track, because our old trams used to be built with a smaller gauge. Besides that, the income the government will have is huge over the income from buses. Besides the we would spare a lot out of fuel.

Brazil is not known by having this kind of transport in a large scale, thus the costs related to project, manufacture and importation might be prohibitive.

Why prohibitive? That would be a long therm project - starting 10 years from now.
